First Aid Instructor/Examiner

Overview

The First Aid Instructor/Examiner course trains instructors to apply teaching and evaluation philosophy to techniques and approaches required to teach first aid skills. Candidates also learn about long-range/short-term planning, class management, safety supervision and the principles of evaluation. Lifesaving First Aid Instructors are able to teach the entire Lifesaving First Aid Continuum upon certification to include the following programs:

-CPR A/AED, CPR C/AED -Emergency First Aid with CPR A or CPR C (OFA Level 1 equivalent )
-Emergency First Aid Child & Community Care with CPR C/AED (OFA Level 1 equivalent)
-Standard First Aid with CPR C/AED (OFA Level 1 equivalent)
-Basic Life Support Responder (BLS)
-Airway Management & Oxygen Administration (AMOA)

Prerequisites

  • 18 years of age by last day of course.
  • Standard First Aid (or higher training) from a nationally recognized agency (Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, Canadian Ski Patrol, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada).
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1, 2, or 3 held at some point in British Columbia. Check your Standard First Aid certificate as it might be deemed as equivalent to Occupational First Aid Level 1. If your Occupational First Aid is from out of province, you must first complete a WorkSafeBC Jurisprudence package prior to attending the FAI course.
  • Employment as a First Aid Attendant or equivalent for a minimum of one year.

Upon passing the First Aid Instructor/Examiner course, candidates must: Complete an apprenticeship on a Standard First Aid/CPR-C & AED course, plus an apprenticeship on a BLS Responder course or a Standard First Aid Recert course.

Recognition

First Aid Instructor Certification Card

Currency

Certification is valid for 3 years from date of issue.

Recertification

Recertification of the First Aid Instructor certification is achieved by attending a First Aid Instructor Recert.

Prerequisites

  • First Aid Instructor (held since 2019; current within 5 years).
  • Standard First Aid & CPR-C/AED (current) T
    • Taught at least two OFA 1 equivalent courses in the last 3 years with the Lifesaving Society BC & Yukon Branch

      Currency

      Certification is valid for 3 years from date of issue.
