Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner Recertification
Description
Lifesaving Instructors play an essential role in providing high-quality training in their community. The Lifesaving Instructor Recert (LSIR) provides updated information to Lifesaving Society BC & YK Branch, to ensure quality Lifesaving programs are available and to promote drowning prevention.
Prerequisites
- Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner (current within 5 years)
Candidates are responsible for having the correct prerequisites. If you have any questions in regards to this please reach out to us.
Recognition
- Lifesaving Instructor electronic certification.
Currency
- 2 years from date of certification

Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner
Description
Lifesaving Instructor/Examiners are trained using a competency-based model that walks them through teaching and evaluation philosophy and the techniques/approaches required to teach water rescue, first aid and related aquatic skills. Instructors also learn about long-term and short-term planning, class management, safety supervision, and evaluation principles.
Lifesaving Instructor/Examiners are trained to teach Junior Lifeguard Club, Swim to Survive, Lifesaving for Lay Rescuers, Lifesaving for Backyard Pool Owners, Safeguard, Canadian Swim Patrol (Rookie, Ranger, Star), Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, and Bronze Cross. Candidates are trained in and must demonstrate skills, knowledge, and attitudes at Competency Level 2 to include all aspects of learning as well as various approaches required to teach water rescue.
Lifesaving Instructor/Examiners evaluate and certify candidates in all items in Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross. The LSI course in the BC & Yukon Branch includes the Examiner Clinic.
If you have completed a Lifesaving Society Full In-Person Swim Instructor Course, you are eligible to register for the LSI Short Course. Ensure you are registering for the correct course BEFORE completing your registration. It is your responsibility to have the correct prerequisites and present them to the Affiliate with whom you are registering. Please check the courses below as some may be an LSI Short Course.
Prerequisites
Full In-Person Lifesaving Instructor Course:
- 15 years old (by last day of the course)
- Bronze Cross (need not be current)
Short In-Person Lifesaving Instructor Course (16 hours):
- 15 years old (by last day of the course)
- Bronze Cross (need not be current)
- Full In-Person Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Course (need not be current. WSI + STIC = SWI is NOT accepted as a prerequisite to the Short Course)
