Trainer

Description

Trainers are responsible for preparing candidates to assume leadership roles as Lifesaving Society Instructors, Examiners, and Coaches. Trainers are responsible to teach, evaluate, and certify candidates for Lifesaving Society Instructor and Coach certifications in the topical streams in which they are appropriately qualified.

Prerequisites

  • Lifesaving Society Instructor and Examiner awards if applicable (any, need not be current) - e.g., Swim for Life Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner, or First Aid Instructor/Examiner.

Candidates are evaluated at a Competency Level 3 and are introduced to Competency Level 4. Teaching experience at the Instructor/Examiner level is strongly recommended prior to attempting the Trainer course.

Upon passing the Trainer course, candidates must complete:

1. The required teaching experience for their specialized stream:

  1. Swim for Life Trainer candidates require at least 60 hours of learn-to-swim teaching experience (Swim for Life lessons, Canadian Red Cross swimming lessons, or YMCA of Canada swimming lessons; verified by employer letter)
  2. Lifesaving Trainer candidates must have taught at least two (2) Bronze Medallion or Bronze Cross courses and exams.
  3. First Aid Trainer candidates must have taught at least four (4) Standard First Aid & CPR-C/AED courses and at least two (2) Standard First Aid Recerts.

2. Complete a Trainer Apprenticeship in their specialized stream:

  • Swim for Life Trainer candidates with the required Swim for Life teaching experience complete an apprenticeship on a 40-hour Swim Instructor course with an approved Swim Trainer Mentor.
  • Lifesaving Trainer candidates with the required Bronze teaching experience complete an apprenticeship on a 36-hour Lifesaving Instructor course with an approved Lifesaving Trainer Mentor.
  • First Aid Trainer candidates with the required First Aid teaching experience complete an apprenticeship on a 40-hour First Aid Instructor course with an approved First Aid Trainer Mentor.

3. Submit a completed Apprenticeship Package and Leadership Development Plan to your regional National Trainer for review and approval by the Branch Education Manager.
