Aquafit Instructor (Independent Contractor)– Langara Family YMCA

For projects that require unique expertise The YMCA of Greater Vancouver will contract work to independent contractors who specialize in the project’s specific focus.


All independent contractors must meet the following requirements:

  1. Contractor must be self-employed
  2. Contractor must be registered and in good-standing with WorkSafeBC
  3. Contractor must carry $2 million in third party liability insurance

Start date:ASAP

Location: 282 West 49th Avenue Vancouver, BC

Hours: 4 hours per week – Wednesdays & Thursdays 9:15 am to 11:00 am

Rate of pay: $25.00 per hour

Scope:The Aquafit instructor will work collaboratively with the Aquatics Supervisor and aquatics staff to provide quality aquafit programming to the members of the Langara Family YMCA.


Major Responsibilities:

•      Teach aquafit classes in a positive and professional manner

•      Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues

•      Develop lesson plans for various aquafit programs

•      Ensure program design, lay-out, and offerings meet the needs of all participants at various levels

•      Lead program delivery, while ensuring contents meet the appropriate criteria and outline

•      Perform general administrative duties and record keeping responsibilities

•      Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all members and staff, including all locker rooms and spectator viewing areas.



•      Current Standard First Aid certificate (valid within 2 years)

•      CPR level C and & AED certificate (valid within 1 year)

•      YMCA Aquatic Fitness Certificate, or equivalent

•      Advanced leadership courses are an asset

•      Demonstrated high level of customer service skills

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver may select successful candidates from this request for expressions of interest. The YMCA of Greater Vancouver is not bound or required to select all or any participants. Those participants selected will be notified as will all unsuccessful participants. Selection will be based on, but not limited to, the information submitted in the Expression of Interest process.


Successful candidates will be required to:

  • Provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, issued no later than 6 months preceding start date
  • Provide 3 professional references
  • Read and sign the YMCA’s Statement of Understanding of 4 Policies
  • Complete the online YMCA Basic Child Protection Training with a passing mark
